About Nsamizi TISD-UNHCR Project:
Nsamizi is an Implementing Partner (IP) for UNHCR that positively contributes towards improving sustainable living standards of refugees and other Persons of Concern, through; Provision of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), Livelihoods and Environment & Energy services in refugee and hosting populations. With funding from UNHCR, the Nsamizi Training Institute of Social Development is to carry out the recruitment of staff to work on its UNHCR-funded project in Nakivale, Oruchinga, Rwamwanja, Kyaka II and Kyangwali refugee settlements. Job Title: Water Engineer (2 No)
Place of Assignment: Nakivale
Reports to: WASH Coordinator
Job Summary:
The Water Engineer will work under the supervision of the area WASH Coordinator and is responsible for overseeing Nsamizi’s water projects, technical implementation, liaison with contractors, UNHCR field teams, OPM, refugees employed for casual work, in-house engineers, as well as providing technical support in all water engineering works at post completion. The Water Engineer will also be responsible for all Nsamizi’s water field activities, including identifying and selecting the beneficiaries of our projects, actively engaging in community mobilization and sensitization, establishing and maintaining regular communication with the Persons we serve, implementing project-related activities, providing regular reports and ongoing monitoring of the projects. Candidates must be aware that this is a field-based position.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Oversee all field operations related to water supply operation and management projects, including prospective project design, water project construction/implementation, and monitoring and evaluation
- Work closely with all stakeholders (Nsamizi, UNHCR, OPM, District Local governments, and refugee leaders) to plan, design and implement water supply systems
- Oversee technical implementation of all water supply systems and serve as technical point person for all system designs Manage on-site work during all stages of the system construction and installation e.g., borehole survey, drilling, installation, and water distribution
- Independently assess needs for maintenance work (post-installation) in projects where a malfunction exists
- Generate and manage budgets relating to construction and maintenance works
- Conduct community technical training and sensitization to all Nsamizi water beneficiaries
- Continually monitor the progress of ongoing field installation and maintenance activities
- Maintain regular contact with other Operating Partners within the refugee settlement to successfully implement and monitor water-related projects
- Appropriately sensitize the communities we work with, including establishing Water boards, water user committees, hand pump management committees where they do not exist, and any other WASH-related livelihoods interventions
- Send daily updates and regular progress reports to the WASH and Field Extension Coordinators regarding prospective projects, construction, and implementation of current projects, and monitor existing projects
Qualifications, Skills, and Experience
- The applicant must hold a Bachelor’s Degree in either; Water Engineering Civil Engineering Water Resources Management Biosystems Engineering Environmental Engineering or any closely related field
- A postgraduate diploma in project planning and management is an added advantage
- Must have at least 3 years post qualification experience
- The ideal candidate is a dedicated team player with strong interpersonal skills
- Applicants must have competitive experience in community development and mobilization, as well as experience working with international stakeholders. The candidate must demonstrate a proven passion for working with the community and possess strong detail orientation and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to design systems using various design applications; e.g., AutoCAD, GIS and GPS applications, WaterCAD, Epanet2.0, etc.
- Technologically oriented with excellent computer skills, including proficiency in email and Microsoft Office software Driver’s license
- Ability to commit to flexible working hours Live and speak the local language(s)
- High proficiency in English; both written and spoken
