The Ministry of Water and Environment (MWE) undertook reforms in 2005 to address the current and emerging water resources related issues in the country and globally. These issues include water scarcity and utilization, climate change, increasing populations, technological advances affecting water availability, distribution, and quality. It was noted that addressing all these issues requires continuous professional development, innovation, research, and effective application of knowledge. In response to these challenges, the ministry established a Water Resources Institute (WRI) which was launched in March 2018 at the first-ever Uganda water and environment week. The institute focuses on four thematic areas namely: Applied Training; Applied Research; Dialogues and Outreach. It targets all water sector stakeholders including in-service professionals, private sector, NGO staff, school pupils, students leaving university, academic and ministry technical experts, policymakers, manufacturers, researchers and policymakers.
